LIBRARY PROGRAMS
Children's Summer and Winter Reading Programs
THE CHILDREN’S PROGRAM
Partnering with the community to encourage children to read.
Why should kids join a reading program?
- Reading, as a leisure activity, is the best predictor of comprehension, vocabulary and reading speed.
- If children read 1 million words in a year, at least 1000 words will be added to their vocabulary. Comic books contain at least 2000 words.
- 49% of pre-kindergarten children whose families took them to the library at least once in the past month show three or more signs of emerging literacy such as recognizing letter, counting to 20, reading or pretending to read or write their own name.
SUMMER ACTIVITIES
Catch the reading bug with the Summer Reading Program!
Play is very important in the summer, but kids also need to keep reading to maintain the skills they acquire during the school year. Have your kids join us this summer. They will have fun and keep up their reading skills.

WINTER ACTIVITIES
WINTER READING TRACKER
The program is offered during the school year and is a great way to make reading fun for your kids. All you need to do is drop by the library and sign your child(ren) up. Then your child can keep track of their reading and work towards earning prizes. When you read books to your child that counts too! Read books from the River Road/Santa Clara Volunteer Library, any library, book store or books you own.
Come to the library to sign up after the beginning of each school year. When you sign up, each child will receive a Reading Tracker and information about how to participate in the program.
